Yr Ysgwrn

Building projects Heritage

Yr Ysgwrn is a very special traditional Welsh farm on the hill above Trawsfynnydd in Snowdonia. The farmhouse was the home of Ellis Evans, better known as Hedd Wyn. Under this pen name, Evans was winner of a series of Eisteddfod bardic chairs before submitting his poems to the National Eisteddfod of 1917. Between submission and the crowning of the Bard at the Eisteddfod, Evans was called up, went to France and was killed in action within days. The chair stood empty and draped in black when his victory was announced at Birkenhead, it is now a hugely symbolic and moving emblem, and his house, preserved by his family, a place of pilgrimage. The farmhouse has now been acquired by Snowdonia National Park Authority for the nation.

We were commissioned following a Round 1 award to develop the plan for visitor experience, the “emotional strategy” and how the stories would be told in the farmhouse and the surrounding landscape, the activity plan and the business plan, all in preparation for the Round 2 application.

Now on site, the project will open in September 2017.
