In 2010/11, we worked with ten museums, five local authority and five independent, across the South East region to review, recommend and help effect change in governance and management structures to strengthen capacity and sustainability.

Our worked ranged from options appraisals for local authority museums, modelling different futures within and independent of the local authority, to strategies for strengthening capacity and sustainability in the independent museums through training, clarification of governance and management roles, advice in specialist areas and long term developmental planning, including capital investment.

In 2011/12, we worked with five hub museums in the South West to improve sustainability. With each museum this involved business diagnostics, developing a menu of opportunities and prioritising key areas for support. Typically these priorities were catering and retail, the potential to charge (for entrance and other core services) and the potential impact of governance change on sustainability.
